Letter From Attorney General Jim Hood
Over the past four years it has been my privilege as Attorney General
to protect the hard working people of Mississippi.
We have accomplished much—reduced the manufacturing of meth in our state, protected consumers and taxpayers, and sought to provide needed help to law enforcement and others affected by Hurricane Katrina. To make our communities safer, we've cracked down on sex crimes through the work of our Cyber Crime Fusion Center, the first in the nation. We have led the fight against illegal drug use, established a Domestic Violence Unit, and launched initiatives to prevent workplace violence. We have righted historic wrongs by convicting Klansman Edgar Ray Killen for the murder of three civil rights workers in 1964. Working hard to protect the young, we have partnered with youth development programs like Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, providing over $13 million to insure youth safety. We launched a School Violence Prevention Initiative, resulting in almost 70 patrols in Mississippi schools. We established the "Friendly Nursing Home Visitors Program" to insure seniors are being properly cared for in nursing homes. We have protected taxpayers—recovering over $100 million for the state general fund in it's tax evasion lawsuit against WorldCom; while the Medicare Fraud Unit has collected tens of millions of dollars in penalties and restitution. To protect consumers, we set up an Identity Theft Unit, and the Consumer Protection Division returned millions to consumers. I will continue to work night and day to make our state safer to raise a family and protect the rights of all Mississippians. I will continue to fight for insurance relief for thousands of Mississippians whose homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by Katrina. Working together, let's build a better Mississippi for everyone.
